Mixed Media Doll Series 2015-2016

Oil Paintings and Mixed Media Doll Series 2015-2016

Doll Series
The Doll series were inspired bphotographs of handmade African-American dolls created during the period of Antebellum into the mid-20th Century.
I was startled and intensely moved by the images. I immediately viewed them as an art form—one which affirmed the identity of a culture that was foreign, but yet intimately part of, America. This resonated with my own experience; I came to this country from Iran as a young teen, searching for my own identity in a land where I was not part of the dominant culture.
My interpretation of the photos are also heavily influenced by ancient cultures of the Middle East and Africa as well as Native America and modern Western European art. These dolls explore the American experience, representing the attempt of all outsiders in America to create their own identity instead of living in a state of denial of who they are. At a time when our nation has become visibly torn, these images speak to all who are both outsider/insider. Since all Americans are always reinventing themselves and the place they live. There is no going back.

Works are done on Arches watercolor paper using oil, gouache, watercolor, ink, collage, and Martha Stewart glitter on some.
